Programme Specification for 2012/13

BSc (Hons) Mathematics for Decision Science
Programme Leader: Dr Nadarajah Ramesh

Entry requirements

The study of decision science provides an opportunity to develop skills in solving a wide range of business-oriented decision-making problems and students of this degree programme will study a variety of topics in operational research, statistical modelling and mathematical and numerical methods.

This degree provides students with the knowledge and understanding of a range of decision-making techniques, including simulation and optimisation and equips them with experience of various software tools. In addition, it enables students to develop analytical techniques and problem-solving skills that can be applied in many types of employment and gives them the ability to interpret and communicate their decisions.

Also, in response to increased interest by students wishing to pursue a career in teaching, we have developed new final year courses including Maths in Society, Issues in Maths Education, and the Undergraduate Ambassador Scheme and all are available to Decision Science students. In particular the Ambassador Scheme aims to encourage and nurture a new generation of mathematicians and gives students the opportunity to gain classroom experience as one of their final year options.

What's the difference between ...
BSc (Hons) Mathematics for Decision Science and other maths programmes?

Typical content
The following is an indication of current programme content. However, the rapidly changing nature of the subject area means that both the courses offered, and individual course content, are likely to change in future years. Finally note that certain combinations of options may not be available.
For details of timetabling and study patterns, see the timetables page. All courses are 30 credits unless otherwise stated.

Year One

Year Two

Optional Sandwich Year

For students who choose a sandwich degree, the third year is spent in industry or business on a fully paid work placement, which we help to arrange.

Year Three

Specifics

Professional recognition
IMA logo This programme will meet the educational requirements of the Chartered Mathematician designation, awarded by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, when it is followed by subsequent training and experience in employment to obtain equivalent competences to those specified by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for taught masters degrees.

Career opportunities
A particularly wide range of employment opportunities are available for graduates in the Decision Science field. These include employment in operational research, business planning, finance, marketing, marketing research and applications of information technology.
