This degree offers students the chance to develop creatively and technically. It affords the opportunity to acquire both the latest techniques and traditional skills in television and film production and post-production. These include use of professional cameras, roles in the studio, editing skills, digital compositing and visual effects. Presentation design and animation techniques for motion graphics are also included. There is a real need in the media industry for creative people, who are skilled in these practices and techniques at the professional level. This course allows for original and creative minds who want to explore specialist areas of television and film production and post-production and develop a portfolio ready for industry.
BBC Training & Development
We currently have a partnership agreement with BBC Training & Development in which they will be inputting lectures and practical studio sessions as part of the course.
BBC Training & Development is globally recognised as a centre of excellence.
It remains at the forefront of the development and spread of training in digital technology in broadcasting.
Broadcast Production and Broadcast Post-Production are taught in conjunction with BBC Training & Development. Typically a trainer from the BBC comes to Greenwich to deliver the seminars for Broadcast Production and Broadcast Post-Production. Additionally students attend two, week long, residential blocks of study at BBC Training & Development, in Wood Norton, Worcestershire. These intensive, immersive courses are hands-on.
Currently we have a significant number of guaranteed places and we expect this to continue. Places for the BBC option may be decided competitively based on grades and attendance. Each training block at Wood Norton will involve four nights away from the University campus. Currently each BBC Training course at Wood Norton costs students roughly £250-£300 for accommodation, food and travel, based on staying at a Premier Inn. These costs could rise a bit in 3 or 4 years time. If students do not want to take these opportunities they can opt for Television Studio Production in Year 2 and Multiplatform TV in Year 3.
It is expected that this programme will especially appeal to those candidates who can demonstrate a passion for film, photography, drawing or design. To that end, it is envisaged that successful candidates will have produced evidence of such a passion. This could take the form of interview, personal statement or a portfolio.
On successful completion of this programme students would be able to:
- demonstrate proficiency in camera and studio techniques
- analyse, design, and create motion graphics and visual effects
- produce and manage assets in a variety of media (text, image, animation, sound, video)
- use a variety of technologies employed in the television and film production and post-production industries
- work effectively in film and video studios
- understand and follow the emerging technologies related to the production and post-productions industries
- take into account technical, social, ethical and legal issues in the entertainment business
- work effectively, both independently and as part of a team.
