Pre-requisites:
A good working knowledge of internet and web technologies, including XHTML, CSS, ASP.NET and PHP (co-requisites COMP1444 and COMP1437 are acceptable)
Aims:
To develop the necessary knowledge and skills to manage the content of large scale web sites and intranets and their related daabase and Content Management Systems. Specific outcomes are:
To develop strategic planning skills relating to large scale web sites and intranets.
To evaluate and implement appropriate Content Management Systems to meet the internet and intranet needs of large organisation.
To develop the project management skills to implement change in an organisation's internet and intranet strategies.
To develop the necessary knowledge and skills to maintain and develop intranet and web sites to implement business rules, maintain quality and meet the changing needs of the users.
To develop critical awareness of legal, social and ethical issues relating to content management of web sites and intranets.
To develop awareness of relevant security issues.
To develop skills necessary to promote a web site and intranet.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course students should have achieved these learning objectives
A. Demonstrable strategic planning and project management skills relating to large scale web sites and intranets
B. Demonstrable ability to evaluate, implement and test complex Content Management Systems
C. Demonstrable ability to synthesise and manage a wide range of internet technologies to meet business needs and provide Quality ssurance
D. Demonstrable understanding of rigorous requirements analysis and its relationship to integration and acceptance testing
E. Demonstrable understanding of legal, ethical and social aspects of web and intranet based systems
F. Demonstrable knowledge of the implementation of security in web and intranet environments
G. Demonstrable knowledge of Search Engine Optimisation and other techniques for promoting a web site
Indicative Content:
Requirements analysis, web-based Content Management Systems (including Microsoft SharePoint and proprietary and Open Source alternatives), strategic planning, project management, Quality Assurance, web security, testing, legal issues (eg copyright, data protection), ethical issues (eg privacy), social issues (eg social networking).
Learning and Teaching Activities:
Each week there will be a 2 hour lecture and a 1 hour practical session. In the lecture students will be introduced to the issues affecting the design, development and management of large scale web and intranet applications. In the lab sessions students will learn how to develop web-based enterprise content management applications. There will also be self-study supported by structured online learning materials.

Coursework 1 - 40%
Evaluation of alternative Content Management Systems to meet specific business requirements.
Coursework 2 - 40%
Implementation of a Content Management System to meet specific requirements.
Coursework 3 - 20%
Weekly research exercises that form a portfolio of evidence.
